How Many Calories Are in a Rice Bowl? Every Base and Protein, Counted

A rice bowl can be a 550 calorie lunch or a 1,100 calorie one, and a greens base takes it lower still. Most of the difference comes down to four choices: the base, the protein, the sauce and a handful of richer toppings.

Here is where the calories in a rice bowl actually come from, every BIBIBOP base, protein, topping and sauce with its count, and four sample bowls added up.

The short answer. A BIBIBOP bowl with a rice base, a protein, four toppings and a sauce lands between about 550 and 1,100 calories. The rice base is the single biggest number in the bowl, at 350 to 370 calories, so the base is the easiest place to adjust.

Where the calories in a rice bowl come from

Every rice bowl is built from the same four parts. At BIBIBOP, here is the range for each.

The base: 45 to 370

The biggest swing in the bowl. Rice and noodles run 350 to 370 calories. Greens run 45 to 100.

The protein: 140 to 270

Korean Crispy Chicken is the lowest at 140. Miso Glazed Salmon is the highest at 270.

The toppings: 0 to 90 each

Most vegetables are 10 to 60 calories, and Cucumber is 0. Avocado, Cheese and Potatoes are the richest, at 90 each.

The sauce: 25 to 140

Spicy Sriracha is 25 calories. Yum Yum Sauce is 140. The sauce is a small part of the bowl that can move the total more than you would expect.

How many calories are in a cup of rice?

BIBIBOP Purple Rice

About 205 calories per cup of cooked white rice

That is the USDA figure for cooked long-grain white rice. A BIBIBOP rice base is 10 ounces, about 1.8 cups, which lines up with White Rice at 370 calories. Purple Rice is 350. Because the base is the biggest number in the bowl, it is the first place to adjust if you want a lighter meal.

The lighter bowl: 320 calories

The plant-based bowl: 830 calories

How to make a rice bowl lighter, or more filling

To lighten it

Swap the rice or noodles for Crispy Romaine, which saves 305 to 325 calories. Pick Spicy Sriracha over Yum Yum Sauce, which saves 115. Load up on the low-calorie toppings: Cucumber, Kimchi, Pickled Red Onion, Carrots and Corn are all 20 calories or less.

To make it more filling

Keep the rice and choose a high-protein option like Chicken or Spicy Chicken, each with 31 grams. Add Black Beans or Curry Chickpeas for a little fiber and plant protein, and Avocado if you want a richer bowl.

How does that compare to a day? Nutrition labels use 2,000 calories a day as a general reference, but needs vary a lot by age, size and activity. A bowl is not good or bad on calories alone. It is about the bowl fitting the rest of your day.
